I often drive past the duck ponds on the way home

I often drive past the duck ponds on the way home from dad’s. Decided to stop today and say hello to the black swans - I absolutely love them. To my joy, they are quite friendly and a little family of cygnets with a protective mum and dad came to say hello. I could have sat and watched them for hours.

In the days of early settlement, they were considered a paradox due to explorers not having seen black swans before. When they reported of them on their return home to England, no one believed that they existed as they had only ever seen white ones before. And so the myth was born - the likely, however unlikely.

Nature always blows my mind. I have seen passionfruit flowers hundreds of times before but every time it’s like the first time. They are just stunning. Have planted quite a few vibes and each one is flowering prolifically. Fortunately I love passionfruit. I also love my garden.

I was rifling around in my drawers today, and I came across this.

I have always loved this, so when mum entrusted it to me about 20 years ago, it has shared a sacred space in my undies drawer ever since.

It is actually completely made of wax (well, except for the silk lining). I would guess it to be around 100 years old. It is quite the miracle that it hasn’t melted over the years, especially in this ridiculous heat, which just goes to show that my undies drawer is a pretty cool place to be.

It was crafted by my great grandfather who was a church guilder - meaning he would do the gilding / gold leafing on the ceilings and ornate cornicing etc in his hometown church in Bamberg, Germany. I actually worked out which church it was a number of years ago, but I would have to rifle around in another set of drawers to find that information, and I should be working so not today.

I had a little play with it, and then put it safely away.

I think it is kinda cool.

Lately it’s been all work and no play. Between the garden, back deck and new chook and duck resort we have been pretty busy. So today we thought we would do something different…

Kerry likes playing with fire. I like cooking. And today we blended the two with a Terra Firma Dining Fire Master Cooking Class.

Charlie made it all look so simple. And to a point it is, but it was great to get some inside tips so that we can reduce the carbon content in our food when we put our new skills to use. 😉

Great day all round. Food was delicious. Learnt some new skills, ate some great food and had a fun day doing something together that wasn’t work for a change!

Happy Birthday to my little This. One year old today!

One year since he hatched out of the one successful egg that I incubated.

This has had a turbulent few weeks - an incident in the Batchelor pad overnight saw him almost lose an eye. I thought in the least he would end up blind, but it would seem nature provides them with the resilience they need to heal - even if I had to provide the isolation to facilitate it.

I have four boy ducks, and while on the whole they get along beautifully, spring and the 'love lust’ that it brings has seen my boys quite horny in the absence of a female, resulting in a pack attack on This in the bachelor pad overnight. In all fairness, it was probably This that instigated it, as he has had a few behavioural issues of late, in part to trying to maintain dominance in a pack of four boys, and my own affections it would seem as he tries to mate with me frequently which is quite disturbing lol.

Anyway, he is on the mend. It’s been a lot of work, keeping his eye sanitised while it is healing - and keeping him away from the others to prevent more attacks - it only takes a second. I have created separate dorm rooms for each of the boys, so there is no risk to them overnight. On the whole they are quite devoted to each other, and even though This has been in isolation, they remain at his side. But hopefully next week, the new, more spacious duck run / condo will be complete.

In the meantime, it’s Happy Birthday to my little duckie. Might clean out the pond and let him duck dive for peas as a treat 🙂

I just wanted to acknowledge my four little buddie

I just wanted to acknowledge my four little buddies, Violet, Wattle, Tulip and Aster.

Last few weeks I have had a lot of joy in posting their interactions with Duke and Xochi. They were all such little characters. During the day I would put them out into a new little hutch I built for them to keep them safe while they were growing, and at night they would live in the bathtub in our spare bathroom. After dinner, Duke would always look forward to me getting them out and letting the have a little jump over the couch, perch on my shoulders or fly on our heads. They were pretty cute. Then after a few minutes they would fall asleep, in my lap, or under my arm, or next to Duke. It was incredible to watch. Nature and the interactions between species has such magic to it.

But it also has a less favourable aspect. This morning I awoke to all my chicks killed by a python that had come into the bathroom through a gap in the ceiling light. It ate two and killed the others. I called a snake catcher to take it away. This is not a pity party post. I’m devastated but I just wanted to acknowledge my little mates, and the joy they brought, and the reason why I won’t be posting about them anymore. I understand it is nature, but having an almost unnatural fear of snakes I am also a little traumatised and that a snake found its way into the house. Xochi sleeps in the room next door, and he hid under the bed for almost an hour this morning. He would have heard it. It’s nature, but I will miss my four little buddies as unlikely as it sounds, they were actually part of the family. She sad this has happened 😞

Narcissus, my Greek youth that fell in love with h

Narcissus, my Greek youth that fell in love with his own reflection, just holds so much fascination for me. The more I search, the more I discover and the more I am enthralled.

This engraving is pretty special. All I knew is that it was by Antoine Caron and that is was dated 17th century. So shortly after it arrived I fell down one of those rabbit holes. I didn’t have much to go on and the print - which is actually the page out of a book - had little to give away. After searching the artist and following some breadcrumbs, I discovered the exact book that it was taken from AND found a pdf photocopy version of that book! *squeals of delight*

I discovered that the page is from a book published in 1629 called ‘Les images ou tableaux de platte peinture de deux Philostrates Sophistes Grecs et les statues de Callistrath’ - translated by Blaise de Vigenere, a French diplomat, cartographer, translator and alchemist (that’s quite a resume!). It is a collection of Greek myths by Greek philosopher Flavius Philostratus from c.200
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While the print itself is attributed to Antoine Caron, seeing he died in 1599, it was probably by Léonard Gaultier or Thomas de Leu ‘after’ Antoine Caron, meaning Antoine drew the original and they made an engraved copy of it for the purpose of printing - they didn’t have scanners back in the day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are 5 published versions - 1615, 1629 and 1637 - all with slightly different decorative banners on the descriptions which was how I worked out which publication mine was from - 1629, of which there are two - Incredible to think that it is 393 years old!!!

I discovered so much more, but the most exciting discovery was the partial myth of Narcissus (in French) on the back of the print has another 5 pages to it, that I have found in pdf format. So need to head back down that rabbit hole for a while… need to translate… thank god for google translate!

Big weekend working on Project F*#! Off Bandicoot, Operation Chook Condo, Project Bathtub Arbour and Project Garden Bar.

When I look back at what I have done, it never looks like much but I have worked my little patootie off. I do chop and change a lot, working on multiple projects so that is part of the reason why but it’s a combination of circumstance - need more materials, need my hubby’s muscles to lift/move/help with something, or I just need a break coz my back is screaming out.

So Project F*#! Off Bandicoot is progressing well - I have some resident bandicoots that spend the nights partying and pretty much ripping up anything I put in the garden. Last week they absolutely destroyed my peanut patch 😑 so, in an attempt to coexist I am creating a portioned off area which will hopefully be bandicoot free. Need to pick up some supplies tomoz so will continue that next weekend as my corn seedlings are ready to plant.

Operation Chook Condo - Need to relocate my girls up the hill to the condo our awesome neighbour built earlier this year in readiness for the chicks that are due to arrive soon, so was busy driving in star pickets so I can fence off their little area to keep them safe. I decided the ducks need a bigger pond so plotted out that area too as well as dug the holes for the gate posts.

Project Bathtub Arbour - Bath tub 🛀 on the hill needs and arbour so I can train my bougainvillea over it. Holes for posts dug ✅

Project Garden Bar - few weeks back we had a tree felled. We kinda undermined the root system when digging out the bamboo roots so it was no longer stable. We had all these logs that we were going to cut into firewood for our neighbours but I decided to use them as a border instead (sorry neighbours). They are VERY heavy, so after getting 8 propped up, I called it a day.

Feeling well satisfied and now plotting next weekend over a well earned beer!

Duke got to test out the new runway today. We are still a few steps away from getting the final bits of fence sealed but we are closer than we have ever been. It’s a big yard!

We were getting one of the trees lopped today, so Duke and I sat at the top on the new grass strip and watched. Of course his first instinct was to do zoomies but after he burnt himself out he just sat with me and watched. Even when a bird taunted him he just sat quietly.

Can wait until I can set him free in this part of the garden - it will be nice to have him with me while I’m working in the garden rather than having to listen to his FOMO over the fence (I’m sure the neighbours will be thrilled too) it will be all fun and games until he digs the first hole in the turf!

The last few weeks he has suddenly become really responsive with his training. I am not sure what has changed but he has become so engaged with my commands it’s actually been a joy. That doesn’t mean we are brain freeze free yet… he still keeps eating the duck food (and their poo 🤮) and he’s still a bit too overzealous with the girls (Daffodil and Hyacinth - the chooks) but they are getting used to him so there is hope!

He still spends hours with the ducks just hanging out. And he chases the brush turkeys away from the food trays - it’s interesting how he knows which ones he can chase and which ones he can’t. There is not a lot of difference between the chooks and the turkeys.

It is with great joy we welcomed the arrival of our newest family members…

The girls are settling in well after being welcomed by a very excited Duke. They are currently residing in a little abode next to the ducks while they settle in and I put the final touches on the condo up the hill.

Daffodil and Hyacinth are Silver Double Laced Barnevelders.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I ummed and ahhhed about which breed I was going to run with for quite a while. I have always loved Barnevelders. Mum had the traditional brown coloured Barnevelders, when I was a kid living on the farm. They laid pretty dark chocolate coloured eggs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I initially planned to get Araucanas (they lay blue eggs) but then I discovered these silver double laced barnies and couldn’t get past their stunning feathers 🪶 it took me a while to find a quality breeder that had ‘point of lay’ hens as they are relatively rare. I hope to get some more day olds in September to add to our blossoming family farmyard.

But for now, the primary aim is EGGS 🥚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had hoped my duckies would yield some eggs but unfortunately, they have all turned out to be boys 🥴 More unfortunate is that Cayuga girls are really hard to get… so at best I would only be able to get one or two in spring. With four boys I would need at least 10 girls to keep the farmyard peace, or risk my boys fighting over a girl and possibly pack raping her to death 😳
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So the advice is: If I just have boys, they will coexist happily. It’s only when girls are introduced that the trouble starts. And, I can’t bear to part with any of my boys, as that means that they may end up on someone’s dinner plate and well, these ducks are my babies.

So boy ducks it is. The girls have been enlisted in the form of Daffodil and Hyacinth. Need to get these animals to start pay their way, so EGGS 🥚 pronto please girls!

Had a big weekend working in the garden, essentially in the part of the garden that became the bamboo eradication project where my hubby made a deal that if I got rid of all the bamboo (which filled this entire space and involved removing over an estimated 32,000 bamboo poles!), then he would get me a puppy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well… I got the puppy, Duke. But while the bamboo was removed there has been a lot of hard work that has had to happen to make sure it didn’t return, and I had a lot of help.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It really has been epic. And delayed. Last year we had several tonnes of roots removed and carted away. But rain for the first 6 months of this year meant that the ground was too soft to get the excavators in, and while much of the structural work (removal of roots, retaining walls etc) had already been done, we just needed to get the machines in one more time to get some final things done - 10 cubic meters of soil conditioner brought in (thank you to the awesome @bassett_barks ), Hay bales for mulching, 3 cubic metres of gravel to backfill the retaining walls and 2 pallets of turf. And I had to remove 6 months worth of weeds so I could cover the slope with core matting before we even started.

And it is done *little squeal*
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We put core matting on the slopes for a few reasons, but essentially it was to stop erosion from heavy rain and to slow the weeds that grow like triffids while I decide what I am going to put there without it becoming unruly again in the meantime.

My body is feeling a little broken from all the heavy lifting (turf is heavy!), but I am beyond excited that it is done.

Next weekend I can start with the planting. Fruits trees, edible natives and some veg to help feed my ravenous duckies 🦆🦆🦆🦆

We have walked a few of the tracks on the Tasman Peninsula and circumnavigated the coastline in a boat. All that was left to do was see it by air… so we could cover all angles 😉 and it’s a bit quicker than walking!

We were blessed with the most perfect of days, despite a few windy ones in the days before when we walked to Cape Hauy and Mount Brown.

It really is a spectacular coastline - rugged cliffs, monumental pillars jutting from the water, rolling hills, relatively untouched bushland and a vivid indigo blue sea 🌊

Spent quite a few hours at the new Callington Mill Distillery at Oatlands.

Callington Mill itself is not new but the purpose built distillery on the grounds is.

We did a tour, followed by a whisky tasting in the Founders room and then lunch back in the restaurant.

We had a blast. Our self guided tour ended up being guided, which made for lots of laughs and some great informations and insights.

Our lunch was sensational and so were the whiskies…

I can say in all honesty that this is one smooth operation. We went mid week so obviously it was not as busy as I would expect it to be on the weekend but the hospitality shown throughout our visit was fun, warm and welcoming. There was some serious still envy on my part!

The views on this one were spectacular… and the steps… they blew my mind too… and my calf muscles… and the wind… it blew everything including my mind!!!

We did the 4 hour return trek to Cape Hauy on the Tasman Peninsula. Honestly, it was worth every second of ache.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In one way it was a stunning day - if I am going by the cloud formation. There were dark looming clouds towards the east but overhead they were wispy enough to take the strength out of the winter sun.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the wind! Hooley Dooley!! It was blowing a gale. It was especially noticeable when we got out of the car at the hike starting point (which is also the end of the Three Capes Track’ depending on where you start!). It just sounded so loud.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Strangely once we started walking it was quite sheltered in amongst the shrub, it was only when we got to the peak at Cape Hauy where we became exposed again. It was just whipping across the cape like all hell! But I loved it.

Wild winds coming of the waters with air as pure as it can possibly be.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And the views were next level. From one coastline to the next and out to a sea of nothingness… blew my mind 🤯

Amazing when we looked back and saw how far we had actually walked in such a short time. Having said that, the walk back was thousands of uphill steps, and I am certain that is not an exaggeration.

So when we finally reached a small clearing in the scrub with some seats, the entry of which is marked ‘only here’, we were pretty thrilled. And yes. Only here.

While the weather was a bit unruly, we did assess if it was safe or not and as mentioned once we were on the trail we were pretty sheltered. Had this not been the case we certainly would not have proceeded and the forecast was favourable otherwise. What a walk!

Truth be know we didn’t actually go all the way to the top of Mount Brown which was a bit of a bummer but we had organised a few things in the arv so we gave ourselves one hour to walk as far as we could and then return. We weren’t actually far from the top when we turned back so I think another half hour and we would have been rewarded with awesome views of Tasman Island… so I hear.

Anyway we walked to the lookout to Crescent Beach. Next time we will leave more time so we can walk down to the beach because it looked really pretty. Cracker of a day!

The Remarkable Cave on the Tasman Peninsula, not far from Port Arthur is one of those natural freak shows where nature has carved a path through the rocks. They say that the cave opening is the shape of Tasmania but I must have got the angle wrong 😳

The water gushed through in a blast, but what I loved most was the colours of the rock face. The play of light and shadows on the surface was so pretty 😍

Stayed at this magic little patch of heaven for a few days.

What a delight it was. I could easily have done a few extra days (or forever).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was a beautiful little beach house, right on the water. The yards were a beautiful collage of quirky little spaces that were almost like something I would have created myself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There was a fully fitted kitchen but we chose to eat out most nights (mainly because I refused to cook), except the one day where we had a late lunch, so we detoured to the oyster farm at Boomer Bay and I just had oysters for dinner. What’s not to love?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Murdunna was a perfect base to hike some of the trails as well as explore some of the surrounding region. Bangor Wine Shed was just down the road. Port Arthur is a bit further afield but we did that the last few times we visited. This time we hiked to Cape Hauy and Mount Brown, and of course visited Bangor, so we had a couple epic days.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each day we would get home in time to watch the sunset at night, and then watch it rise again in the morning… Ok… that’s a lie… I’m just not a morning person, and hiking takes it’s toll. Need rest to be able to do it all again. Besides, the shutters were down so not really even sure when it rose. I could lie again and say it was really early, but Tasmania winters don’t see the sun rise until around 7:30 so it’s not even that early.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BUT… Once I was awake I would yank the shutters up and watch the bunnies hop around in the yard in front of my window while I sat in bed and drank my coffee. Much squealing was done 😊
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At night I would get up periodically to see if there was an aurora happening (alas, no) But oh, the stars!! It really is a place of the stars.
